Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end, Travis Kelce, may have been absent from the 2024 Golden Globes, but one fan speculates that he would have had a response to the awkward joke directed at Taylor Swift if he had attended.
Both Swift and Kelce had busy Sundays, with the “Cruel Summer” singer being a nominee at the awards ceremony in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category for The Eras Tour, while Kelce had a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The scheduling conflict meant both had to go solo. Considering the uncomfortable joke aimed at Swift by host Jo Koy during the show, social media users believe Kelce’s presence might have changed the dynamic.

During the broadcast, Koy remarked, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there’s just more to go to.”
The camera panned to Swift, who appeared unamused and sipped her drink. Koy later apologized for the failed attempt at humor.
Controversy has surrounded the attention Swift receives when attending Kelce’s games, sparking discussions on their supportive relationship.
The two, who faced romance rumors last summer, have shown mutual support for each other. Kelce even flew to Argentina for one of Swift’s Eras Tour shows last year.
A viral video shared by social media user @dearjohnno1stan on X humorously suggests how Kelce might have responded to Koy: “Know your role and shut your mouth, you jabroni.”
The video, captioned “If Travis Kelce was there last night,” has garnered over 174,400 views, 380 shares, and 5,000 likes at the time of writing.
Fans took to social media to express their opinions, with some suggesting that if Kelce had been present, the joke would have been omitted from Koy’s script.
A listener of Kelce’s podcast expressed a desire for the incident to be discussed on “New Heights” with the hope that Kelce would refer to Koy as a jabroni.
Another comment read, “God help #JoKoy had Travis been there.” Referencing a previous awards incident involving Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars, one observer wished Kelce had been present to emulate Smith’s bold reaction.
Despite the awkward joke and losing out to Barbie, photos from the evening suggested that Swift still managed to enjoy her time at the Golden Globes.
Newsweek reached out to Travis Kelce’s publicist via email for comment, but no response has been received as of now.
