Chiefs Owner: Kansas City Chiefs’ Future at Arrowhead Stadium Tied to Royals’ Stadium Decision

The Kansas City Chiefs have firmly established their commitment to Arrowhead Stadium as their home for the foreseeable future.

However, their efforts to modernize this 51-year-old iconic venue are currently on hold, pending the decision of the Kansas City Royals regarding the construction of their new $2 billion ballpark.

Located within Kansas City’s Truman Sports Complex, Arrowhead Stadium shares this space with the Royals’ Kauffman Stadium.

Nevertheless, the MLB team is on the brink of relocating to a different area.

For the Chiefs, a significant element in determining their future plans is the location chosen by the Royals, who missed their self-imposed deadline this summer for selecting a single site.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has been in communication with the Royals, anxiously awaiting their decision on whether they will remain in Jackson County or opt for Clay County.

Hunt expressed, “Once they make that decision, that will help us with our process as we move forward.”

Staying in Jackson County would likely involve further collaboration between the Chiefs and the Royals in lease agreements, while a move to Clay County would mean that the Chiefs would need to operate independently.

Hunt emphasized the Chiefs’ desire to renovate Arrowhead Stadium with the goal of “extending its life” and securing another 25-year lease when the current one expires in 2031.

Meanwhile, the Royals aspire to have their new ballpark ready by 2028.

The Royals’ decision could have significant implications for the Chiefs, as it might open the door for them to develop a range of mixed-use facilities adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium.
