He found the kitten on the side of the road, trembling and alone. It was so small it fit in the palm of his hand, its eyes barely open, its body fragile and cold. He stopped the car, picked it up, and held it against his chest for the entire drive home.
His plan was simple: foster it until he found it a family. He wasn’t looking for a pet. He didn’t need the responsibility. He would care for the kitten temporarily, make sure it was safe and healthy, and then move on with his life.
But the kitten had other ideas.
Every night, it fell asleep on him. Curled against his chest, tucked into the crook of his arm, completely at peace in his presence. He tried to stay detached, reminding himself this was temporary.
